Jared Padalecki as Sam Winchester from the TV show Supernatural

Teary-eyed "baby" Sam from the very first episode of Supernatural. :aww: My 1st entry for 'Drawn to Pain' contest held by #LiveActionTVMovieArt. Was it because of a dead girlfriend, mum, or something else, it was too long ago to remember exactly, especially after you marathon a few seasons in a row to catch up. :D

Continuing with practice on black paper. Try no. 2. A bit more complex this time. Too many hours in, but screwed up every part that's actually important. Also, ruined parts that were good while trying to fix those that weren't. Fantastic. Some other parts are not all that bad. Very comforting. Maybe I'll like it a bit more after some time and will try not to repeat some mistakes, especially leaving something for too long unfinished while eager to draw something else and rushing because of it. The "Winchester curse" (= every try of drawing either of the brothers results in so-so, crappy, not nearly good enough drawing) has been following me with the latest graphite SPN fanart too, but it's too early to tell exactly how much I won't like the end result. Well, I'm not stopping until I have decent, really good looking drawings. :evillaugh:

Little note to self: start sharpening the damn colored pencils!!! This ain't graphite!

Tools used:

:liquisoft: A4 Canson Mi-Teintes black paper
:liquisoft: Prismacolor and Faber Castell black and white colored pencils
:liquisoft: Cretacolor and Conte white and gray aquarelle pencils
:liquisoft: toilet paper for blending the background
:liquisoft: white gel pen
:liquisoft: stick eraser
:liquisoft: ref picture

OMG! :faint: I entered with this only for the sake of participating in this great contest because I knew I wouldn't make it(again) with desired artwork which is unfortunately still far from finished, I can't believe this actually won! Thank you SO much! :glomp:

The Winchester Curse, lol.

I think I can see where you say you messed up, but it doesn't bother me at all. It's still amazingly detailed and his hair is just... awesome. I LOVE ALL OF THIS.
And I know about sharpening pencils. I have a bad habit of hardly ever sharpening my graphite pencils (mechanical pencils yay I'm lazy), but you just have to sharpen your white pencils every three strokes or something. :ohnoes: And not to mention scanning these things. :|
But it's still my favourite medium to work in, and to see others work in!

Thank you very much! :glomp: All my H and B pencils up to 6B must never be sharpened. Once a year or so sharpening is necessary of course if I used them a lot, but I'm using mechanical pencils more and more, even on big drawings now. So far I've tried sharpening colored pencils from three different (good) brands with good sharpener and none sharpened nicely and/or from the first try, nothing like they originally came. One's point broke more than once till I manged to sharpen it, the other one's little piece of tip got chipped, the other one's all bumpy...wtf?! In short, no luck with sharpening either of the pencils and getting nice smooth sharp point and wood holding it undamaged. I thought the scanning would be even worse than it is. The more surface of the paper is filled the less job with the scan to make it look like something. :D

Ah no, I hate that about coloured pencils! I had that problem too, until I accidentally found one of my sharpeners who sharpens them perfectly. :B Maybe you can find a sharpener especially for coloured pencils? I know those exist, so. :B
True, although my scanner seems to disagree with my black paper in general, it is easier to scan (/edit to look right) when I've drawn more on it.

Aww, baby Sammy! It's ridiculous how young the boys looked in the first season compared to now, isn't it? :aww:

To the drawing - wow. It's absolutely stunning! I know you may see a lot of flaws in it, but to me it looks perfect! I'm also amazed by the progress you made compared to your first drawing on black paper, the level of detail you put into this is unbelievable. No matter how many hours you worked on it, it was worth it.

Apart from that - congratulations to the username change!

Yeah, it is, especially Sam. :) Thank you very much! I just started another SPN fanart and really hope it will be much better than this one. (haha I still can't make myself work on the big graphite one) I think I'll draw at least one more Sam too, only more recent version of him :D

Nice work; keep it up! Try make-up sponges cut into whatever wedge-shapes seem useful for blending background. They're cheap at a dollar store and work well...:sun:

Well dear I think this looks awesome I love the detail you're able to capture in this dark piece... Thank you! (It's always comforting to know that when I post something I think it's not, for example, my best work/ is horrible/bad/I hate it there will be always some people who will like it/love it/even call it a masterpiece. It really helps milder up the negative feelings towards it and maybe even make me like it a bit or a lot with time which maybe would have never happened if it wasn't for all this positive comments, so that's why I put up all drawings, not only my best work, because if that was the case, you'd barely ever seen anything )

And yes, like a minute ago! I was, like, now or never, and just changed it! I thought it will be so weird, but it's not at all, I'm practically already used to it and it's been, what, 5 minutes? Many people know me by "wickedillusion" on other sites so and I hope deviants who don't will soon remember it. :)

Girl, I remember your note with a question about white-on-black drawings. I knew you're going to be absolutely amazing at executing this type of artworks! Your first and second attempt are far more better that all my white-on-black portraits together! What I mean is that I try and try and try and I'll never achieve the outcome I wish, but you... you have a natural gift, no matter what you touch, it's gold:lol: Even tho you see a lot of shortcomings!
Fantastic hair, fantastic clothes, fantastic face. I like that you chose a picture of "old" Sammy :)

Thank you so much! It's a huge compliment. :glomp: And please, you're really good too and can only get better and better with time! I'm very glad you like what you see so far. I'm still in very early stages, have a lot more tests and experiments to do with pencils, technique, etc.(mixing normal, waxy and aquarelle pencils can be quite risky, work done with waxy one-Prismacolor-is more or less permanent, no room for many screw-ups) and make a lot of mistakes, but I think I can already envision the direction I want to go with this, in sense of style, detail and texture work on black paper. On this drawing the hair is the only thing I can say I like even though it was rushed and could be better too. :D Yeah, why not, I usually try to pick some more recent refs, but I quite liked this one although maybe I should have waited a bit more for it. Thanks again!

Sorry for a late reply, it became my bad habit D:

Thank you, it means a lot, but still, my w-o-b drawings lack something, they are very simple and a bit artificial looking :( Yours and *naturalshocks have more natural feel if I can call it like that. They look more realistic. I can draw lifelife pencil portraits, but it seems it's hard for me to achieve it with other media.

See? Sometimes drawing in rush is an advantage  Or maybe it works out only with hair :giggle:
Anyway, you're very welcome  Hope you find your perfect tools and do more such stunning white-on-black drawings!
